Your child's education is important -- and deserves attention. We know that it is confusing deciding between so many different companies and tutors. To make selecting easier for you, we created a list of questions you should ask BEFORE tutoring begins. The answers to these questions will help you make the best choice for your child.

Top 10 Questions You Should Ask

1. Is the tutoring organization a business or a non-profit?
Because HistoryMakersLA is a non-profit, we do not worry about office space rent, profits, or fancy advertising. Instead, we focus our resources on getting students the best tutors.

2. Does the tutoring take place at home or at a facility?
Our experience demonstrates that many students are more easily distracted, losing concentration when tutoring takes place in the home. HistoryMakersLA offers tutoring at various locations throughout the San Fernando Valley.

3. Will my child be tutored one-on-one?
Certainly one-on-one tutoring is available through HistoryMakersLA at a modest fee. For most students, we recommend tutoring in small groups. Studies have validated that students become increasingly engaged in the study process when part of a small learning group.

4. How much experience do your tutors have?
As a non-profit, our teachers are our biggest and best investment we make with our dollars. We hire highly experienced teachers that are really good at what they do! For example, a California "Best Teacher of the Year” is also a HistoryMakersLA tutor!

5. What are the qualifications of the tutors?
All of our tutors have required California teaching certificates graduate degrees or are highly qualified.

7. What is your organization's driving force?
At HistoryMakersLA, we are driven to help students get better grades and higher test scores, while creating an entire enrichment experience. Our students will build the confidence to solve community issues and contribute to improving Los Angeles. Our founder, Michael Hernandez, came from a from a Latino family who rose out of the migrant fields of California and the coal mines of Arizona. Every day, he is inspired to help LA youth experience the magic that education can bring to make a real difference in the world.

9. How can I support my child’s education at home?
This is a wonderful question. It is very important for parents to support your child’s learning efforts. You can support your child's education by becoming engaged in your child's school activities. You can do this by:

Attending parent conferences, open houses and school fairs
Actively asking your child if they've done their homework
Providing a learning environment at home that encourages your child to do their homework
Asking your child what happened in each class at school
Asking your child what they learned in each class
Monitoring academic and citizenship progress reports
Making sure you child receives tutoring where needed, as well as utilizing all the support the district provides
Encouraging summer school and after school participation

10. Do you have roots or long term ties here in the community?
Yes. History MakersLA has partnered with the Los Angeles Police Department and the San Fernando Valley Faith Community to work in addressing problems that relate to gangs, the high school dropout issue, and "at-risk" youth and their families seeking not only academic intervention but enrichment opportunities. The work that HistoryMakersLA conducted two years ago, while seeking federal grants, was instrumental in clarifying the community issues facing the business, education and faith community of the San Fernando Valley and in working with an existing coalition of organizations that is seeking to improve community life in the Valley.
